Sometimes, you just don't see it!
You stare at your own website, day in and day out, and just don't see what others see...you can't!
You're in it!
While you may be BFF's with your site, that reader that just stumbled upon it by accident this morning knows nothing about it.
You can't be there to personally introduce each and every visitor and give them the "grande tour", you need your website to do that for you.
So the question becomes...is it doing a good job?
Is your website the "go-getter" employee who's excited to sell your merch to anyone who strolls by? Or is it sitting behind the cash register, phone in hand, letting customers stroll in and out without so much as an attempt at eye contact?
Sometimes, it's the second, and you won't even know it!
That's why it's so crucial that you not only give these 5 areas a once over right now, but on the regular!
If you have a really hard time taking a good honest look at your own pride and joy, have a friend or family member who's not familiar with your site do it for you!
#1 Visit Your Home Page
When people arrive at your site, is it utterly, insanely, stupidly clear what you are there for?
No? FIX IT!
If you're gung-ho on keeping your home page as is, or maybe just showing recent posts (which can sometimes be a bit misleading if you blog on a variety of topics), create a "Start Here" page, and use that to guide your new visitors to what you REALLY want them to see!
#2 Check Your Menu Items
It's easy for your navigation menu to get a little crowded throughout the year as new features and categories develop in your business...Clear the crap out!
Make sure you take a discriminating eye to your menu, and only leave the "NEEDS" visible, incorporating others as drop down options if need be.
You can also use the Google Analytics Chrome Extension to see which menu items are being clicked most to help you through this process!
General "NEEDS" are Home, Start Here (if you use this page), About, Blog, and anything that addresses what you offer (such as a shop, link to a course/ebook, etc.)
#3 Revamp Your About Page
This is one of the most visited pages on your site, so it needs to sparkle and shine!
Read and re-read the copy on your About Page and make sure that it still speaks 1000% to your personality, purpose, and brand!
Doesn't really fit anymore with how you've developed over the year? CHANGE IT!
Your About Page should be 80% about what you can offer your visitor, and 20% about you...people are curious about you, but they really want to know what's in it for them!
#4 Put Your Sidebar To Work
For most websites, your sidebar is on every page, making it a big deciding factor for your visitors in whether or not they decide to hang around and see what you have to offer.
This is PRIME REAL ESTATE, so put it to work!
Feature things here that will benefit your business, such as your opt-in offer, products, or pillar posts that really speak to your target audience!
Find your most visited posts in your Google Analytics Stats, then create an image with the title of the post (using Canva or PicMonkey) and feature 3-4 of them in your sidebar. These images will draw the eye much better than a simple link, and show off your best work!
#5 Promote Your Email Signup + Follow Up!
Your email list is one of your most important assets, so you need to make sure it's always working, and perfectly inline with your goals!
Verify that your main opt-in offer still speaks to your target audience, and that the information in it is up to date. Make sure that your subscribe form is easy to find, and working properly, so it's easy peasy for your visitors to sign up!
Lastly, when was the last time you added to your follow up sequence?!
Double check that the automated emails your readers are receiving are still inline with your brand, goals, and subscriber's interests, and that you're not letting your list go cold!
Run your website through this checkup at least every couple of months to make sure that you don't end up with that "bad employee" who ends up costing you more money than anything else!
