Sharing Your Content On Social Media (And Why You Might Be Hearing Crickets!)

Sharing Your Content On Social Media And Why You Might Be Hearing Crickets!

So you've got your website set up, content in place, and now it's just a matter of putting your feet up and popping a bottle of bubbly to celebrate because this is when the big bucks start rolling in!

Ummm...nope!

The old theory of "build it and they will come" is long gone, and if you approach your online business that way, it will look more like "build it and you will hear crickets, get frustrated, and wonder what the hell went wrong"...doesn't have as nice a ring to it.

When you've spent the time crafting the perfect post, the last thing you want is for it to float around in cyberspace with no one actually appreciating what you've created.

Easy fix right? Just share it on Facebook, or Pinterest, or Twitter, and then watch the traffic roll in!

...

And when it doesn't?

What if you are sharing everything you've got on Facebook several times daily, in different ways, and getting nothing but crickets?

No likes.

No shares.

No traffic.

Been there, done that, it sucks.

Sharing on social media is a fab way to draw attention to your blog/website, but not just any social media outlet will do!

Oh, you're super familiar with Facebook and know everything there is to know about promoting there? That's cool.

But if your target reader is hanging out on Twitter, you might as well be yelling in an empty room.

Building your audience is a lot like dating.

You'll need to do some "wining and dining" and get to know them to find out what direction you're headed in, and if they're "the one".

But before all that, you have to meet them, introduce yourself, and smile from across the room in a non-creepy, "come hither" sorta way!

If you're looking for an apple, don't shop at a hardware store.

In other words, you need to start hanging out where they hang out!

How To Find Your Audience

Luckily, there are some easy peasy ways you can narrow down your search and find your "true love" without losing your mind over it.

Let's start with your competition, shall we?

Who's already doing what you want to do, or at least has a following that you would like to have in terms of size and interests?

Use a tool like SimilarWeb (free...amaze!) and let the search begin!

Grab the printable Audience Tracker worksheet from our Free Resource Library, and let's get started!

Plus weekly emails packed full of actionable advice you can take to the bank!

If you're not quite sure who you should be looking at, start by hopping over to SimilarWeb and selecting a category that is close to your niche and check out the top 2 or 3 sites that come up.

(If you're already established on social media, you can include yourself in there to get a clear comparison of where you might be missing out.)

Next, let's pretend you're one of those uber crazy women who never learned how to date like a normal person...It's background check time!

Once you enter the specific web address you're stalking (ah-hem..."researching"), you will find a ton of useful info that will tell you all about the audience they have, what their traffic is like, and where they come from.

Scroll down to the "Social" section, and see which networks stand out (there will always be one!).

Why Does This Matter?

These are not just the social networks they focus on, this is where they are actually GETTING traffic from!

Fan counts can be deceiving, but traffic doesn't lie!

Complete this process with the top 3 sites in your niche and find the common denominator between them. Laser focus your energy on the top 2 social networks that come up, and make them your go-to when sharing your work.

Don't hesitate to do this a couple of times a year to stay on top of the ever changing social trends of your audience!

By targeting your promotions, time, and energy on specific networks that are already proven to show results, you're skipping the trial and error process these other sites had to go through, and learning from their success!

Say "No" to crickets, and start getting your work in front of the people that matter!

    1. Posting to silence can get brutal sometimes, so hopefully this will help you in a direction that gets things BOOMING for you 😉

P.S. Your blog name is ADORBS!! Love it!

  2. This post is exactly what I needed. My site has been barely getting traffic and I’m currently in hiatus to figure out a new game plan. Thank you for recommending SimilarWeb, I’ve been trying to find a good way to measure social referrals to my site and this was exactly what I was looking for!

    1. Perfect! It’s a great way to take a sneak peek inside the success of others and where they focus their time…why spend your time trying to figure it out bit by bit if they’ve already done it for you, right? 😉

    1. Love it!
And you’re totally going to go through that initial honeymoon phase where everything is ALL about that other person (ie. you will be snooping every website and their COUSIN on here! LOL)…just embrace it!
      Have fun Alyson 🙂

    1. Thanks Lindsey! I totally love hearing that!
BTW, your blog is super cute! I have a bit of a theme crush on Pretty Darn Cute designs, and absolutely LOVE Modern Blogger Pro…nice choice 😉

  3. Really helpful stuff! Thanks for sharing, will definitely try this. I’m doing good on Twitter and FB but let’s see if I can refine that a bit more. Thanks again!

    1. Always keep refining;)
On my old site I was kicking ass on Facebook, never realizing that I coulda been KILLING IT on Pinterest! You don’t know what you don’t know right?!
      Thanks for popping in Liz!

  4. Love your attitude! So many people think that they can sit back and rake in the money. While I have strategies in place that I earn money while I sleep, I certainly have to put in a decent amount of time to make that happen. When you have the right strategies, you can certainly make a lot of money and reduce your efforts, but not down to zero.

Keep up the great work and live unstoppable!

    1. You hit the nail on the head Rhonda!
Systems for any kind of income (let alone passive streams!) don’t set themselves up…but MAN is it worth the effort when it’s done!
That’s why I thought it was so important to share this post. Some people think that they just “share it everywhere” and the traffic comes. But there are ways to “work smart, not hard”, and ramp up your results!
      Thanks for commenting 🙂

  5. I looove this post! I have been blogging for 2 years now but I finally decided to be more serious about it just a few months ago…and getting people to read and share my content has always been the main challenge for me. Thanks alot for sharing!

    1. That’s so exciting Tisha, congrats!
Sharing strategically and actually getting the RETURN on your efforts is a struggle for many bloggers, but if you do your homework, it pays of big time 😉
